Public Housing Rally - 2 Aug 2025

It was a wonderful and emotional day standing with residents, community groups and supporters at the rally for public housing in Melbourne on the 2nd August. We heard from Hank, Jeanie and Helima, residents of the public towers under threat of demolition, and the crippling effects of our governments decisions.

Harry of RAHU (Renters And Housing Union) was inspiring, and Zac of Stop the Demo pointed out that ‘Public Housing IS Healthcare’.

Our reality right now:

The Victorian Government plans to demolish 44 public housing towers, forcing out over 10,000 people from their homes.

This will rip apart communities and shrink the already desperate supply of public housing — at a time when thousands are already homeless across Victoria.

  •   Over 60,000 households are on the social housing waitlist.

  •   Families with children are sleeping in cars, tents, and unsafe temporary rooms.

  •   The streets, crisis shelters, and food banks are already overwhelmed.

Demolishing homes will make this crisis even worse.

Thousands gathered to be heard — to tell the government Melbourne says:

No to demolition

Yes to retrofitting & keeping housing public

Homes, not profit — because housing is a human right.

It is essential that we stand for every person who needs and deserves a safe, secure place to live.

The momentum is growing. The people can see. Will the government listen?
